Google Guaranteed vs Google Business Profile: What’s the Difference?

Two of Google’s most powerful tools for local businesses are often confused. Here’s what each one does, which one you should focus on first, and how they work together.

They show up in the same place — but they’re very different

When you search for a local service on Google, you typically see three types of results at the top of the page: Google Guaranteed ads (with a green checkmark badge), a map pack with three local businesses, and organic search results below. The Google Guaranteed ads and the map pack both come from Google’s local business ecosystem — but they work completely differently and have very different costs.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free listing that every local business can create and manage. It’s what powers the local map pack — those three business listings with star ratings, photos, and a map that appear when someone searches for a local service.

A well-optimized Google Business Profile is the foundation of local marketing. It’s free to create and maintain. Ranking in the map pack doesn’t cost per click — once you’re there, every call or direction request you get from it costs you nothing.

The key point: Google Business Profile visibility is earned through optimization — categories, reviews, posts, photos, and consistency. It takes work upfront but pays off indefinitely without ongoing ad spend.

What is Google Guaranteed?

Google Guaranteed is a paid advertising program, officially called Google Local Services Ads (LSAs). These are the ads that appear above the map pack with a green "Google Guaranteed" badge. They’re only available to certain business categories (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, cleaning, and several others common in South Florida).

Here’s what makes Google Guaranteed different from regular Google ads: you pay per lead, not per click. When someone calls or messages you through a Google Guaranteed ad, you pay a set amount for that lead. If the lead doesn’t convert or was clearly low-quality, Google will often credit you back.

To qualify, your business must pass a Google background check and license verification. The Google Guaranteed badge is Google’s seal of approval — which is why these ads convert so well. Consumers trust the badge.

Key differences at a glance

Which one should you focus on first?

For most South Florida small businesses, the answer is Google Business Profile first, always. It’s free, it compounds over time, and it’s the foundation that makes everything else more effective. Running Google Guaranteed ads without an optimized Business Profile is like driving traffic to a bad website — you’ll pay for the traffic and convert very little of it.

// The right order of operations

Step 1: Optimize your Google Business Profile fully. Step 2: Build review count to 50+. Step 3: If you qualify, add Google Local Services Ads on top. This sequence produces the best ROI because each layer builds on the one before it.

How they work together

The best-performing local businesses in South Florida run both. Their Google Guaranteed ads appear above the map pack, driving immediate high-intent leads. Their optimized Google Business Profile appears in the map pack below, capturing additional organic traffic at no cost. Together, they dominate the top of the local search results page — making it very hard for competitors to break through.

If you qualify for Google Guaranteed and you’ve built a strong Business Profile, running both simultaneously can double or triple your local search visibility.
